MS1210-S Oil in Water Analyzer

The MS1210-S is an industrial oil in water analyzer designed to monitor the outflows from industrial facilities, water in cooling systems and to detect fuels and other VOCs in drains and waste water networks. The presence of pollutants such as BTEX, trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE or Perc), vinyl chloride, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,1-dichloroethylene, styrene can lead to heavy fines and process contamination. The instrument works by sensing gases or volatiles to provide a non-contact measurement system with very low maintenance requirements.

Applications

  • Monitoring for oil in water contamination
  • Detect VOC contamination in industrial wastewater
  • Monitor drain and stormwater systems for flammable liquids
  • Surface water systems for fuel pollution
  • Offer a monitoring solution for air, land remediation and industrial applications
  • Detect VOC breakthrough in carbon beds
  • RO membrane protection
  • Measurement of VOCs in process water

Features and Benefits

  • No sensor contact with water: low maintenance, no sensor cleaning
  • No reagents: low running costs
  • Measures both Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and VOCs
  • Electronic Nose: not affected by turbidity
  • Can be calibrated for specific substances: used to monitor known spills
  • Catches VOC chemical spills not just hydrocarbons
  • Alarms to SCADA and other communication interfaces

Industrial Effluent: The Problem

Discharge of VOCs into wastewater is an endemic problem in engineering, chemical processing, food and beverage production and other industrial processes.

Spills can lead to illegal discharges, pollution, fines and PR disasters.

For this reason, some industrial facilities have purification plants to remove the bulk of these contaminants from the water before it is discharged, but even these suffer from failures and can be over run.

The cost of not monitoring your effluent

When spills happen large fines can be issued by the regulatory authorities and local, national and social media can turn an accident into a PR disaster with long-term implications.

Additionally it is likely that regulatory bodies will ask for expensive on-line TOC analyzers to be installed, which require a lot of reagents and maintenance at a very high additional cost.

The Solution

By installing a VOC Industrial Effluent Discharge Monitor at the effluent, you can be notified as soon as the values start to increase and take appropriate action, avoiding all the problems associated with unexpected pollution events.

The VOC Industrial Effluent Discharge Monitor is used to check the industrial effluent from industrial facilities and business premises to ensure that it is complying with environmental regulations.

Its contactless measurement technique means that:

  • It does not need reagents
  • Requires little or no maintenance between services
  • The instrument is robust and reliable
  • It is cost effective

For applications where drains are being monitored the MS4000-S can be used to directly sample gases on the drain. This provides a lower cost solution but reduces absolute accuracy.

What does the VOC Industrial Effluent Discharge actually measure?
It measures the concentration VOC in water measured against a target gas standard (usually toluene). Other compounds can be targeted.
How often does the instrument provide a reading?
The instrument provides a reading via the 4-20 mA output continuously.
What is the reported value?
The reported value is Total VOCs in the effluent water, in ppm, is in the range from 100 ppb to 40 ppm
What is the principle of operation
The system samples the air above the effluent/sewage continuously; this air is then passed through the sensor which reacts with VOCs and measures their concentration. The concentration is then reported via the analog output.
How is the analyzer calibrated?
The instrument is factory calibrated against toluene.
What are common target gases?
Petroleum Gas, Methane, Iso Butane, Kerosene, Ethanol, Diesel, Iso-butylene, Toluene, Acetone, Xylene, Heptane, Benzene, Methanol Mercaptan
What is the required maintenance? Is it expensive?
The instrument requires a service every 6 months to replace some low-cost components such as activated carbon filters and to make sure that there are no air leaks.
What is the warranty?
Every instrument comes with 1 year warranty from the shipment date
How does the analyzer alert the user to high concentrations of gas?
It incorporates a relay which is switched at a user definable threshold. This can be hardwired to valves/pumps and so on to stop processes very quickly. Alternatively the users SCADA system can also be used.
